DYNAMIC DUO GEARS UP FOR FINLAND

In was an arena befitted for stardom. Equipped with the best lightings and sound system, Genting International Showroom was the perfect venue for the Karaoke World Championship (KWC) finals.

The forty contestants who had qualified had only one aim in mind – to walk away with the title of being the best male and female karaoke singer and to represent Malaysia in Finland for the grand finals.

As only one female and male could be chosen, outshining a group of talented performers was 27 year old, Badri Ibrahim and 22 year old, Tham Hui Chyi. Ibrahim won the judges votes and crowd support with his rendition of a man without love while Hui Chyi hit all the right notes with a Chinese popular song, Bu Guan You Duo Ku.

Badri said that he was thrilled by the win, as this was the first time he had participated in such a competition and was glad too. He took part in the auditions held at Atria Shopping Center in Damansara Jaya. “This is a chance of a lifetime and I hope to do Malaysia proud in Finland,” he added.

Echoing the same sentiments was Hui Chyi who was trying hard to contain her excitement. She said “The KWC was an excellent opportunity for ardent karaoke singers to participate in and I thank the organisers for providing us with the chance.”

Aside from representing Malaysia in the KWC finals in Finland where they will compete against finalists from 32 other countries worldwide, the winners also walked away with RM 3,000 cash prize.

The panel of judges comprised of the Managing Director of Music Scene Production Sdn Bhd, Gary Amani Abdullah, the first Malaysian Idol runner up, Vick and Shawn Yong, the famous Malaysian saxophonist.

According to Gary, the judges had a daunting task judging the contestants as they were all talented and had performed exceptionally well. He commented that the contest provided Malaysians the chance to showcase their capabilities and talents.

“Malaysians are talented and with this contest, ardent singers are able to gain a head start in the entertainment industry. Unlike other singing competitions, which are based on popularity and public votes, this contest is truly based on talent,” said Gary.

He added that he was impressed with the extra efforts taken by all the contestants in their dressing, stage performance and acts. They put in al lot of hard work to ensure their performances were at peak levels.

Nodding in agreement was fellow judge member Vick who said “It wasn’t easy picking the winners and KWC gives new comers a chance to compete in a professional arena and showcase their talent to world.”

The finalists were judged based on their vocal sound quality, rhythm and tempo, vocal expressions, stage presence and entertainment value. Aside from these criteria’s, the audience responses were also taken into consideration.

The man behind bringing KWC to Malaysia, Alan Wong, Principal Event Consultant from Tech Zone Marketing, who was also emcee for the night said “For amateurs, they had performed at an international standard and I am sure the Badri and Hui Chyi will do Malaysia proud in Finland. I look forward to seeing them compete in Finland,” Wong is also representing Malaysia as one of the judges in Finland.

He further added that the event wouldn’t have been a success if it was not for the support and sponsorship rendered by the various shopping centers such as Atria shopping centre, Summit USJ, Klang Parade, Subang Parade, Mines Shopping Fair and karaoke centres in the Klang Valley, Genting Highlands and other sponsors. He hoped that more organisations will support KWC in their efforts.

He added that the contest will be held again next year and will be carried out in all states nationwide. “Each state will have a finals and the winners for the respective states will come together to compete in the Malaysian Grand Finals. I urge all those interested in participating in the contest to start preparing themselves, for it will be a stiff competition,” said Wong.

The contest is open to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. Professional singers or performers are not eligible to participate. Participants are allowed to perform any song of their choice in any language within a 5 minutes time limit.

Tech Zone Marketing is the exclusive license holder for the Karaoke World Competition. The event first began in 2003, and this was the first year Malaysia is participating alongside Australia, England, Hungary, Kenya, New Zealand, Indonesia, China, USA, Japan, Germany and other countries world wide.
